Pre-k has become expert at trying new foods with our Wednesday Cafe. They once again braved something new as Springside parent Bonnie Stys shared her love of veggies on two visits. During the first visit each girl tried spaghetti squash and on the second visit Pre-k invited TK to try some turnips. Here is some information she provided so you can share in your daughter's new adoration of vegetables:
Healthy Habits-Miss Bonnie the 'Healthy Lady' visited the classroom where we touch-talk-taste veggies in the Squash Family. Eating Squash, either Summer Squash (Zucchini) or Winter Squash (Spaghetti, Acorn) provides Calcium, Iron, Vitamins and much more. Spaghetti Squash can be a great lunch or dinner choice along with a protein to balance your meal. See the recipe below for preparation time less than minutes and cook time 20 minutes.
Recipe: Spaghetti Squash:looks like a 'yellow football'. Cook it like you would an uncovered baked potatoes.
1. Poke it: using the back end of the electric beater, safely poke multiple holes all around the squash to allow for the steam to escape during cooking.
2. Put It : Put it in a 325 degree oven, on the rack. No pan, No foil, No covering.
3. Press It: Based on the size of the squash when you press or gently squeeze the outside and it is soft then it is finished cooking.
4. Remove from oven, cut in half, spoon out the seeds and pulp in center.
5. Using a fork pull the squash away from the sides.
Add your favorite which may be : butter, salt, red sauce, parmesan, salsa. Enjoy!
